February 3rd-7th

Here's What We've Been Up To in 3rd Grade:
Reading We are wrapping up our unit on fact and opinion and will begin our next genre study (persuasive letters). Students have also been working hard during our reading WINN time to identify different text structures.

Word Study:  Our test on long "u" vowel patterns will be Friday. We will then begin to work with long "e" patterns in accented syllables. Examples include: needle, between, feature, increase, extreme, complete, meter, secret.

Math: Fractions are well underway! Students have had time to explore our math tools (fraction strips and circles), and we have been representing fractions with numbers, pictures, and words. We will begin comparing fractions and finding equivalent fractions using our tools.

*Please continue to practice multiplication facts if your child does not already know them.

Science: We will begin our next unit (Invisible forces) discussing balanced and unbalanced forces, friction, and magnetic pull.

Social Studies: We are learning about how Michigan became a state, the pioneers, and the laws and people of our state.

Writing: We have decided on our topic and are working to create chapters for our informational writing.

Reading Night! 3rd grade will be hosting a reading night on Tuesday, February 11th. This will be similar to our math night in that you and your child will be able to explore some of our classroom activities surrounding reading and even have a chance to win a new book and some other great prizes! Hope you can join us.

Supplies
Just a reminder that this is a great time of year to refresh some of the supplies that don't make it all year. Please talk with your child and see if it he or she could use some updating. The following should be checked:

thin tipped dry erase markers
gym shoes (many have outgrown now)
earbuds/headphones (many are broken or don't work)

Seesaw

We are in the early stages of trying out a new app designed to make communication between home and school easier. The app allows families to see completed work and send encouraging messages to your child about his/her accomplishments. It also allows the teacher to send quick reminders, updates, or tips about classroom activities. We are hoping that this makes communication between home and school easier! Please remember that we as teachers are learning to use the program so we welcome your feedback. If you would like to get on and try, your child's teacher will send a link in the email with today's blog information. We would love for you to try!

Winter Is Here!

Please remember the following:

1. Students go outside unless the wind chill is under 10 degrees.
2. Label all gear--many students have the same gear and confusion does happen.
3. Students must go outside unless there is a doctor's note.
